WILLEMIEKE KARS

Who are the Nieuw West women? What role did they play in the development of Amsterdam’s youngest district? How do they perceive their neighbourhood and how do they see their future? The portraits in this exhibition tell the stories of the first generation of women, from the 1960s to the present.

This project is commissioned by Amsterdam Museum & Pakhuis de Zwijger as a travelling exhibition in Amsterdam and made in collaboration with journalist Warda El-Kaddouri and photographer Saskia Aukema. In March 2020 there will be a big exhibition in Amsterdam Museum.

Special thanks goes to Femke Awater (Pakhuis de Zwijger) & Gonca Yalciner (Amsterdam Museum) and all the brave women I had the pleasure to photograph.
